NIGERIA: Veteran White House journalist, Helen Thomas dies at 92

Helen Thomas, the long-time White House correspondent who was known for sitting in front rows to grill past presidents of the United States has died. She was 92 years old. Thomas, who died yesterday at her apartment in Washington, had been ill for a long time and had been in and out of hospital before coming home on Thursday, according to a friend and colleague, Muriel Dobbin.
Thomas carved a niche for herself in the world of journalism when she became the pioneer for women in journalism. She was very persistent. One White House press secretary described her questioning as “torture” – and he was one of her fans.  Her refusal to hide her strong opinions and her public hostility toward Israel caused discomfort among colleagues. On a videotape that went round the internet, she said Israelis should “get out of Palestine” and “go home” to Germany or Poland. The remark brought down widespread condemnation and she ended her career.
