Lagos CP: 20 Errant Policemen Under Probe

Contrary to the speculation that the police hierarchy turns a blind eye to crimes committed by its officers, the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Mr. Umar Manko, Tuesday  said about 20 policemen were currently being detained and investigated at the State Criminal and Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, for different offences.
Manko, who made this disclosure during his assessment of his one-year in office at the helms of affair of the command, said errant and trigger-happy policemen had no business being in the force, stating that such policemen would be dismissed if caught in the act. He disclosed that the errant officers under investigation for different offences had either been sanctioned or were under investigation, including the officer who in June shot and killed nine-year-old Timilehin Ebun, at the Ketu area of the state. He said: “The Police Force of today has no room for rascals and trigger-happy policemen and if you commit any offence, you will certainly face the law.
The service of today is undergoing transformation under the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr. Mohammed Abubakar. “Therefore, all active police personnel have no choice but to key into the transformation agenda or get kicked out. Lagos with a workforce of 38,000 personnel, 19 police divisions and 13 area commands, already has a horde of challenges to grapple with and as such should not be compounded by erring policemen.
“For those officers who feel that because they have worked in the state for long, it is going to be business as usual, they only have themselves to blame because under my watch policemen must conform with the rules and regulations guiding the profession.” Manko stressed that contrary to claims, crime and other social vices had drastically reduced in the state, adding that statistics also served to prove that armed robbery operations, kidnapping and other vices have gone down considerably.
