NIGERIA: Tambuwal, Ihedioha Harp on Unity

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal,  Wednesday advocated the building of strong democratic institutions in Nigeria.

In a goodwill message to commemorate the Democracy Day, Tambuwal said strong institutions were needed in the governance of the country in order to deepen democracy and sustain it for the future generations of Nigerians.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mallam Imam Imam, Nigerians needed to nurture and protect the country’s democracy by participating actively in the governance process at local, state and federal levels.

He urged the political elite to imbibe the cardinal principles of democracy such as openness and transparency, as these would impact positively on governance and the well being of the people.

“We should not forget so soon, the devastating effect of military rule and how past dictatorships have stunted the growth of the country and severely hampered the freedom of choice of Nigerians,” he said.

On his part, Tambuwal’s Deputy, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, commended Nigerians for their patience and resilience in preserving the unity and integrity of Nigeria in the last14 years of democracy.
Ihedioha urged all citizens to remain steadfast and committed to the task of nation-building and the quest for a better Nigeria.
