THE Federal Government has called for the cooperation of the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, in the development of the Niger Delta.
The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe, who made the call on Wednesday, explained that over 80 per cent of the nation’s resources were from the Niger Delta region.
He maintained that there was the need to fast-track development and improve the people’s standards of living.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to Amaechi in Port Harcourt, Orubebe urged the governor to join hands with him, other governors in the region and the private sector to ensure speedy growth of the Niger Delta.
The minister, who led top government officials to Rivers, said they were in the state to hand over the ‘Niger Delta Action Plan’ to the state governor and appeal to him (Amaechi) to work together with them.
He said, “We were in Cross Rivers State, Akwa Ibom State and Imo State before coming to Rivers State. As I go round, I see the feelings of the governors of the Niger Delta and their people.
“I quickly understand. Judging from the history of the Niger Delta; we are talking about from 1957 till date. Our visit today is to hand over the Niger Delta Action plan to you and to appeal that you work together with us as a team to do those things that should be done for our people and Nigerians generally.
Amaechi said the Niger Delta master plan would be a signature project that could promote speedy development and progress in the Niger Delta.
He added, “Any development that is not planned will be chaotic and will not achieve its objectives. You talked about the 50-year development plan you got from Denmark.
“We, in Rivers State, also have a similar thing; the Greater Port Harcourt 50-year master plan, which we concluded in my first tenure.”
