NIGERIA: Presidency weighs options to woo more govs against Amaechi

Governor Chubuike Rotimi AmaechiStill unsure of booting out the current chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF, Chubuike Rotimi Amaechi, in a transparent secret ballot election, the Presidency is weighing many options aimed at giving it victory when the election of the forum is eventually held in May.

CODEWIT gathered yesterday that the Presidency was worried that despite a deliberate effort to demonise Amaechi and reduce his support base, he was actually becoming more popular by the day, wining more support from fellow governors in the process.

It was gathered that the growing popularity of Amaechi stemmed from what other governors see as his effective handling of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, thereby giving them a voice in the affairs of Nigeria.

The Presidency is said to have been rattled on realising that its meddling into the NGF with the creation of a rival PDP Governors’ Forum and the vilification of Amaechi had virtually failed to deplete his support base barely two months to the NGF poll.

As a way out, Presidency’s strategists, were said to have counselled that efforts be doubled to woo more undecided governors into its fold to be able to defeat Amaechi at the scheduled poll in May.

One of the governors leading the campaign for Amaechi’s downfall repeatedly warned some of his colleagues to support the cause and by extension work for Jonathan’s 2015 re-election or risk losing certain benefits.

The governor warned that the Presidency might not share the Excess Crude oil revenue until it was sure of majority support for against Amaechi in May.

The Presidency is also said to be considering withdrawing police commissioners and security operatives considered friendly to the anti-Jonathan governors under the guise of routine re-deployment of officers.
