NIGERIA: FCT Minister commends residents over peaceful election

VotersFederal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed has commended the electorate, the entire residents of FCT, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC over the peaceful and harmonious conduct of the Area Council election held on Saturday, March 16, 2013 throughout the territory.

Reviewing the election yesterday, the Minister hailed the orderly conduct of the voters, security agents, polling officials and the entire residents of the territory.

He thanked the residents for heeding his call for a peaceful election thereby taking our democracy a notch higher.

According to him, the peaceful atmosphere that pervaded the FCT during the election was a product of hard work, commitment and patriotism by all the stakeholders as well as the level playing field provided.

He further thanked the traditional rulers, religious leaders and civil society organisations in FCT that in one way or the other assisted in making the polling exercise hitch-free.

In the election, the peoples Democratic Party, PDP, won five out of the six council areas chairmanship seats, while the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, won one.

According to the results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, PDP won chairmanship positions in Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, Bwari, Kuje and Kwali area councils, while the ANPP won in Gwagwalada.

Of  62 electoral wards, PDP won 44 councillor seats; ANPP, nine; Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, four; Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, three, while one ward at Abaji was inconclusive.

Speaking to Vanguard on the voters’ low apathy in Unit 001 A-Ung Pashie/Kofar Gidan Sarki, Ward 10 beside the ancestral home of Senator Philip Aduda, where only 50 out of 791 registered voters participated in the exercise, the paramount ruler of the area, His Royal Highness, Chief Emmanuel Kyauta Yepwi, said that although INEC made all the necessary preparations for the elections as evidenced in the provision of all electoral materials, voters’ outcome was unimpressive.
