CAN Leadership Meets with Lagos Governorship Aspirants

All governorship aspirants in Lagos will on Monday February 2 meet with the leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and representatives of various denominations in Lagos State to enlighten the Christian community on their plans for Lagos State.

In a statement signed by the Secretary of CAN Lagos State, Israel Akinadewo, the body noted that it was necessary for the church to meet with the candidates since CAN was at the vanguard of fighting for a governor from the Christian religion.

The events which holds at Hoares Memorial Methodist Cathedral, Sabo, Yaba, according to Akindadewo, is not a debate session but rather an interactive session whereby the aspirants will enlighten Lagosians on their plan for the state and how they want to go about such plans.

The CAN noted that it was imperative to have such discussion so that the church can hold them accountable after the first tenure of whoever wins in office. “We want to a situation whereby we can hold them at their words. In the past we have not been involved in who rules us. But now we want a situation whereby we can pray for them as well as remind them of their promises to the people of Lagos. We cannot afford to fail now that many of the aspirants are Christians. Lagos must get better.”

Top church leaders are expected at the event which will commence at exactly 11a.m.

The chairman of CAN, Alex Bamgbola warned that CAN is not partisan and has not anointed any of the candidates. “We are non-partisan in this dispensation. The two major contenders and indeed all the aspirants are eligible to the seat. We are not going to endorse any of the candidates but we will leave Lagosians to decide. It is wrong for any church leader to endorse any candidate since people have different political leaning.
