Angry Nigerian punches Obasanjo at Lagos airport

Obasanjo-olusegun-secuFor some time now, the security situation in Nigeria has been a source of worry for both the government and the governed. It assumed a new dimension yesterday when an unarmed man attacked former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos. Eye witness accounts revealed to Streeet Journal that the attacker had earlier been denied entry into the Presidential wing with stern warning from the security operatives never to return to the area. Street Journal however gathered that the man carefully hid himself behind the fence of the car park attached to the presidential lounge.

And by the time former President Obasanjo’s chartered jet landed just a little after 9:00a.m, he moved straight into his Toyota Landcruiser. Two other vehicles carried his security aides. As the convoy of three vehicles tried to negotiate its way into Airport Road, towards the local wing of the airport, the man who had earlier been barred from entering the Presidential Wing emerged from his hiding place, ran towards the Jeep in the middle of the convoy, opened the door and forced himself into Chief Obasanjo’s vehicle. He dealt a number of punches before mobile policemen and Air Force personnel around came to salvage the situation. They were apparently alarmed by the sudden opening of the door and after they had succeeded in dragging the man out of the vehicle, he was severely beaten by the men on duty. The beating was however not enough to silence the man as he kept shouting “America is watching”.

Right after that, the security at the presidential wing became even more tightened. People and vehicles entering the lounge and car park were subjected to rigourous screening.
