The Supervising Minister for Aviation, Dr. Samuel Ortom, yesterday urged Fulani herdsmen to end the terror being unleashed on the people of Benue, according to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Ortom, who said this at a news briefing in Makurdi, asserted that the Fulani herdsmen most stop the senseless killings and bloodshed which had brought tribulation and torment to the Benue people.
“I call on the aggressors and Fulani herdsmen to stop the senseless killings. End the fire and bloodshed which has brought tribulation and torment to all Benue people. End the terror now. The security situation in our dear state has worsened, nowhere is safe.
“Our people have been driven from their ancestral homes and farms. This situation should perturb every ethnic nationality in Nigeria. They have destroyed communities in Makurdi, Torkula, Daudu, Tse-Akaahena, Tse-Ortom and over 60 other villages. My farmland of over 150 hectares has been destroyed by the terrorists who have hidden under the platform of Fulani herdsmen to carry out this mayhem,†the minister said.
Ortom said his people were being regularly attacked by the terrorists, destroying their houses, farmlands and killing them in the process. The minister further said in solidarity with his people, he had suspended his governorship campaign activities for one month.
“As a result of the terror which has been visited on my people by these criminals and blood-thirsty Fulani herdsmen, I have decided in solidarity with my people to suspend for one month my governorship campaignâ€, he added.
Ortom commended the efforts of the president and the state governor in ensuring that the ongoing bloodshed in the state was stopped.
NAN reported that the minister also took journalists to the affected areas to access the level of destruction. It further reported that the minister donated relief materials to refugees at North Bank, Daudu and Gbajimba.
