Unknown gunmen yesterday morning abducted Wazobia, Cool FM Presenter and online personality, Mr. Anthony Akatakpo, popularly known as Akas Baba and have demanded a ransom of N10 million for his release.
His wife, Candy, confirmed the incident and said her husband was kidnapped at about 2a.m. yesterday when unknown gunmen invaded their house at Rumuekini community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State and whisked her husband away after shooting him on the leg. She said the hoodlums drove Akas Baba away in his Mitsubishi Endeavour SUV car, noting that the abductors of her husband have demanded a ransom of N10 million for the release of the radio personality.
Meanwhile, the management of Globe Broadcasting & Communications Limited, owners of Cool FM, Wazobia FM and Nigeria Info, have condemned the abduction of their staff and called on security agencies to expedite action to effect the safe release of the presenter.
In a statement signed by the Head of Stations, Cool FM, Wazobia FM and Nigeria Info, Port Harcourt, Mr. Aduratomi Bolade, the company said, â€œAkas Baba was beaten and shot in the leg by the kidnapers in the presence of his children and wife, despite cooperating with his attackers.
He was thereafter whisked away in his Mitsubishi Endeavour SUV with registration number LSD 871 CM. The violent act left Akas Babaâ€™s family in great trauma.â€
The company also confirmed that the abductors made a demand of N10 million ransom before fleeing with Akas Baba.
The company said it had reported the incident to the state police command and other security agencies and expressed confidence that they would do everything to ensure the release of the presenter.
The company expressed worry that his life might be endangered by the gunshot wound, if he did not get medical care on time.
â€œWe once gain plead with the people holding Akas Baba to release him immediately, so he can return to his family and we can all put this sad experience behind us,â€ the company said.
Reacting on the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, said he rushed to the presenterâ€™s house with his men when he heard of the abduction.
He said his command would do everything to ensure the safe and early release of the presenter.
â€œWe sympathise with you at the difficult moment. We feel your pain and anguish. Madam, I promise you that my men will do everything humanly possible to ensure that your husband is returned to you unharmed within the shortest time possible,â€ Ogunsakin told the wife.
The commissioner added that some relatives of the abducted presenter had been invited for questioning.
