Unidentified gunmen Monday attacked a police checkpoint in Gidan Mutum
Daya along Katsina-Kano Road, Kastina State, killing three policemen on duty.
The spokesman of the police in the state, DSP Aminu Abubakar Saddiq, confirmed that three policemen were killed at the checkpoint, describing the suspects as cattle rustlers riding on motorcycles.
He added that when the suspected rustlers attacked the checkpoint, the police responded immediately and the gunmen abandoned their motorcycles.
The police spokesman added that as the police were pursuing suspects in a Golf car, they opened fire and killed the policemen. Saddiq stated that none of the gunmen was either arrested or killed but the police were on their trail.
He promised that the criminals would not escape the hand of justice.
An eyewitness who is a taxi driver, told journalists on condition of anonymity that he was right at the checkpoint when he heard gunshots towards the area.
The eyewitness added that when he turned to see what was happening, he saw three lifeless bodies of the policemen on the ground.
He added that the gunmen who were four in number, were riding on two motorcycles.
According him, the gunmen urged people around the vicinity of the checkpoint not to panic as their targets were only the policemen.
He added: â€œIn fact when they came, all the passengers I was carrying in my car, nine of them, ran into the bush. But they told us that we were not their target and that the policemen were their target. After the incident, I could not locate four of my passengers as they ran into the bush in panic.â€
