Delta State: Attack on Prof. Patrick Muoboghare

Prof. Patrick MuoboghareOn Saturday, September 6, 2013, the Delta State Commissioner for Education (Basic and Secondary), Professor Patrick Muoboghare, was viciously attacked by some elements among the youth at a meeting in Ughelli North Local Government Area.

What was scheduled as a peaceful meeting among political groups in the area was hijacked by a few misguided youths that took advantage of the atmosphere of camaraderie to inflict bodily harm on Prof. Muoboghare.

The commissioner was wounded from a knife attack, but thankfully, he was immediately taken to hospital where doctors attended to him. Prof. Muoboghare is stable, recuperating and responding to treatment. He is not and was never in coma.

We unreservedly condemn the unprovoked attack on the commissioner.  Arrests have been made by the police and perpetrators of the crime will face the full wrath of the law. At a time that Delta State has emerged as one of the most peaceful states in the country, the unfortunate incident belies the perception of the youth as the successor generation among the political class that should usher an era of tolerance in politics.

We hereby urge Deltans, especially youth to eschew violence in all their conduct as attacks on persons under any guise is a criminal act punishable under Nigerian laws.
