Botmang died at the age of 76 after protracted illness in his country home of Zawan, Jos South local government area of the state. The deceased has been on dialysis for sometimes following complications arising from diabetes mellitus, but finally succumbed to death on Saturday morning. Confirming it, the state Governor, Jonah David Jang, while paying tribute, said “the former Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Chief Michael Botmang, has served humanity to the best of his ability”. Jang, in a statement signed by his Director of Press, James Mannok, noted that Botmang fought in sickness to live and urged the family to accept his death as God’s time for him, adding that he loved the people and would be greatly missed. Chief Michael Botmang, born 1938, was a two-term deputy to Chief Joshua Dariye from 1999 to 2007 and acted briefly as governor from 13 November, 2006, when Dariye was impeached by six out of the 24 members of the state House of Assembly. He held forth for six months before the Supreme Court ordered the reinstatement of Dariye. Former Commissioner for Information during the Dariye administration, Mr. Yakubu Dati, who also confirmed Botmang’s death on Saturday morning, described him as a “loyal deputy.” He said Botmang discharged his duties diligently to the administration and the people of the state, adding that he would be greatly missed. Dati said, “His death is very unfortunate. Botmang was a loyal deputy, who discharged his duties faithfully to his boss, Dariye, especially during those turbulent years of the administration. He was an amiable person, who will be greatly missed.” Also paying tribute, Botmang’s spokesman during his six months as acting Governor, Hon Sylvanus Namang, described his death, coming shortly after that of Chief Solomon Lar, first civilian Governor of the state, as a monumental loss to the people of Plateau. He also described him as amiable and peace-loving, whose legacy will thrive in the memory of the people of the state.
