Lawmaker Charges Politicians on Poverty Alleviation

A member of the House of Representatives, representing Kaura federal constituency in Kaduna state, Hon. Gideon Goni has challenged wealthy individuals and public office holders to assist in curbing the growing rate of poverty among Nigerians, especially those at the grassroots.
Speaking while distributing poverty alleviation materials worth millions of naira in Manchock, headquarters of Kaura local government, Goni said the level of poverty in the country was unacceptable.
He maintained that economic empowerment, rather than the paltry sums of money some politicians often give to voters on election days was the only way to complement government’s efforts at addressing the poverty situation in the country.
The lawmaker said he was motivated to give out the materials to his constituency as part of efforts aimed at reducing poverty among people in his constituency.
Over 1000 women and youths who were earlier trained in various skills were given power generating sets, sewing machines, motorcycles, barbing and hair-dressing equipment to start their businesses.
The lawmaker said the beneficiaries were drawn from Kagarko, Kaura, Zangan, Manchok and Bondom wards adding that five more wards were yet to benefit from the scheme.
“We did not promise the people milk and honey to our people, but we assured them that we will add value to their status and I will do everything
within my means to contribute to their well being” Goni said.
Also speaking at the occasion, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in Kaura local government, Mr Philip Ashim commended the lawmaker for the gesture and charged the beneficiaries to take advantage of the items to better their living standard of living.
