‘Nigeria Loses N50bn to Fire Disaster Annually’

The Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro, Thursday disclosed that the country loses an estimated N50 billion worth of properties annually to fire disasters.
The minister who disclosed in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during the fifth National Council on Fire also said the ministry had presented the National Fire Service code to the Federal Executive Council which, according to him has been found germane to President Goodluck Jonathan’s transformation agenda.
According to him,  "As I am speaking to you now, we are losing an average of 50 billion Naira worth of properties annually and so many lives are lost every year.
"Fire disaster is not regular occurrence. ‘People hardly take proper notice of what happens but when fire disasters occur, especially against the impending climate change, it would cost this nation very seriously in losses to its commonwealth.
“We've already presented the national fire safety code to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and it has been properly noted and found germane to the present transformation drive of the this administration.
“What we are required to do now in order to get the local governments and the state government involved is to present it to the national economic council that has in its fold all the governors of the states. We are hoping that gradually, we will get there by asking everybody to embrace the imperatives of the fire safety codes.”
The minister noted that the imperativeness that would make the fire service effective in saving the national commonwealth through fire incident had been taken into their proper perspectives.
