When Tukur Took Unity Campaign to South-west

Ugo Aliogo captures the glitz and fun that characterised a recent reception in Lagos for the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur

The night was greeted with so a lot of excitements and expectations, as a large crowd of party faithful waited to welcome and celebrate a man who is not only a political colossus in national politics, but an elder statesman who has made impacts in governance.
The event held at the Eko Hotel and Suites Lagos, was organised by the Foundation for World Peace (FWP) to honour the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, on his conferment of African of Man of the Year 2013, by Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBC) in Washington, the United States.
Tukur, delivering his welcome address, applauded the unity of purpose in the PDP in the South-west. He said if the unity was sustained, it would enhance the political unity of the party at the state and national level.

“I sincerely thank the members of the South-west PDP for the wonderful reception. I want say here that our party is united in the South-west. I am particularly interested in the affairs of the South-west people and especially Lagos because I am part of you. I want all members in the South-west geo-political zone, irrespective of tribal differences to unite for the success of our party.

“It is my wish that the unity of purpose that we have enjoyed today shall translate into the political unity and success for the party. As the largest political party in Nigeria and Africa, we are very strong, vibrant and united as a result, almost all our members who had left the party still found it worthy while to come back. The political difference we are facing presently in the party is just a family feud. This difference cannot divide a party whose main focus is democracy and the enthronement of the rule of law. Our party believes strongly in the freedom of expression and dialogue.”

The PDP chair further commended the South-west PDP for the support given to President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration and pledged the commitment of the national PDP to give full support to the forthcoming zonal congress and importantly, the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States next year.

“Our party says election not selection; our party says consensus not imposition. I want to thank the Yoruba nation for the support to my administration. Indeed, the National PDP has always enjoyed unflinching supports and assistance from you at all times.
“I want to assure the South-west PDP of President Goodluck Jonathan’s continued support especially in the zonal congress coming up soon and most especially the governorship election in Ekiti and Osun states in 2014. Our success in these two elections will enhance victory in the future elections of 2015. Statistics shows that we are better than the opposition parties. PDP is one and the same party,” he said.
Tukur who refused to sound as much political affirmed the resolve of the party to welcome all the willing aggrieved members back to the fold.

“All aggrieved members should come into the big umbrella. The party is aimed at the unity of all members and the party is ready to receive everyone. The PDP is a party that believes in discipline, fairness and equity. The roles of the party are reconciliatory without confrontation, transforming, peace and security and rebuilding the party based on equity and justice,” he said.

In spite of the factional crisis rocking the party, Tukur said the PDP members were still united and that they would not change their position or party. He also frowned on the propaganda machinery of the opposition which he noted was one of the problems of the South-west PDP and assured them that the party would set up stronger propaganda machinery to counter the efforts of the opposition.

However, on the significance of the day, Tukur said: “Today’s celebration is very significant because many faithful of the South-west PDP have come out en mass to celebrate with me on the conferment of the Africa Man of the Year 2013 award by the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC).

“Also, today’s celebration was put together to celebrate democracy and help to us to take our rightful place as Africans in world. I want our members to get prepared in order to take over the administration of government because PDP is the largest party in the country, a strong regional power in West Africa and the party is a leader in the Africa continent.

“We have a strong platform through a strong institutional political party that will be able to give the leadership and direction not only in Nigeria and West Africa but on the Africa continent. We believe that with this strong institution, we shall be able to bring peace, stability and security that will create room for development in the society.”
“Our Party is united in the South-west” he said, applauding the level of unity of purpose in the zone especially in Lagos and noted that the unity would translate to political unity for the party.
