Edo State: Bill prohibiting kidnapping in Edo passes 2nd reading

BENIN — A Bill seeking to prohibit the act of kidnapping and for other matters connected thereto now before the Edo State House of Assembly has sailed through its second reading.

The bill prescribes death penalty for persons involved in the act of kidnapping.

Sponsor of the Bill and Minority Whip of the state legislature, Mr. Kingsley Ehigiamusor, leading a debate on same, said that it seeks to prohibit the act of kidnapping in the state, adding that measures should be put in place to protect the lives of the citizens living in the state.

Describing the act of kidnapping as inimical to the society, the legislator, who represents Igbueben constituency, noted that the bill when passed into law will eradicate insecurity in the state as well as protect the society.

Other lawmakers, who  contributed to the debate were Victor Edoror, Paul Ohonbamu, Mrs. Elizabeth Ativie, Paul Osayimwen and Abdulrazaq Momoh. They condemned the act of kidnapping and described same as unholy occupation, which the youths engage in for quick money.

They lamented that the act of kidnapping had risen to an alarming proportion in the state, adding that the unique thing about the bill was that it seeks to proscribe penalties for those who engage in the act and those who facilitate same.

Summing up the debate on the bill, Speaker of the House, Mr. Uyi Igbe, re-echoed the views of the lawmakers that the bill was meant to eradicate insecurity in the state and referred it to the House Standing Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for fine-tuning before submitting its report within 24 hours to the House for consideration.
