Helsinki: Police adamant about event safety

The police will not re-consider its safety procedures for events, despite the criticism stemming from January's stabbing in Jyväskylä City Library and the subsequent cancellation of a book launch event in Kotka. The procedures are consistent across police departments, asserts Mikko Paatero, the national police commissioner.

However, in the aftermath of the Jyväskylä incident, similar events are naturally viewed in a slightly different light. Ultimately, however, the responsibility over safety measures lies with the organisers, he stresses. “The police can set conditions on, for example, the number of security guards […] but is not solely responsible for securing events.”
