Technical and Vocational Education (TVET) is expensive – Education Minister

Education Minister, Professor Rukayat Rufai Technical and Vocational Education (TVET) is expensive, yet government must do more to fund it and get it properly organised in the interest of national economic growth, Education Minister, Professor Rukayat Rufai told  a three- day workshop on occupational standards in Lagos recently.

She mentioned various activities of government to give adequate recognition and reward to skilled but un-certificated workers in various sectors of the economy. The minister spoke through Dr Mashud Kazaure, the Executive Secretary for the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) who also presented the keynote address at the workshop.

The minister called on participants at the workshop to do a thorough job so as to give hope to thousands of skilled workers who do not possess certificates from existing technical colleges but who have sufficient skill to keep them in paid employment.

She disclosed that government has set up a committee on occupational standard headed by business mogul, Alhaji Aliko Dangote  which is expected to standardize what various categories of skilled  workers would be entitled to after a clear assessment of their capabilities.

Speaking on National Vocational Qualification Framework (NVQF)  Kazaure noted that in meeting the skills needs of the teeming youths and addressing the challenges of under-employment in many countries, government has been compelled to strengthen the link between vocational training institutions and the work place.

He added that NBTE has been emphasizing the need for a proper definition of the National Vocational Qualification Framework. Dr Kazaure also observed that participants should see National Vocational Qualification Framework as one of the ways of finding solutions to the challenges of Technical and Vocational Education (TVET).

On the prospects of the National Vocational Qualifications Framework in Nigeria, the NBTE boss added that it provides descriptions of the knowledge skills to be demonstrated as well as a common grid of skills levels for all qualifications included within the frame work.

Over 10 organisations from the public and private sectors were represented at the workshop. The purpose of the workshop is to find ways of recognising the efforts of skilled workers who have no certificate so they can be adequately rewarded in both public and private sectors.
