Your take: Michele Bachmann officially leaves her church

t1larg.bachmann(CNN) – On Friday we posted on Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann and her husband Marcus formally withdrawing their membership from their longtime Lutheran church in Minnesota just days before the congresswoman officially announced her candidacy for president.

The story had lots of people talking, with 2,500 comments and counting.

Many commenters posed a basic question: Why’d the Bachmann’s leave their church?

I asked the Congresswoman that question after running into her at Washington’s Reagan airport but didn’t get very far.

A spokeswoman later told me that the Bachmanns had stopped attending the Minnesota church two years ago and are attending a nondenominational church in the state as their schedules permit.

Many commentators picked up on the connection between then presidential candidate Obama and his former pastor:NYcitizen
Before anybody says anything derogatory or mean regarding this article: Obama quit his church while he was running for President! Remember?? The pastor of his church, Rev. Wright, all of a sudden became very controversial….making the Obama’s membership at the church put into question and much scrutiny! Then Obama threw Rev. Wright under the bus!!!! SO….with that being said….and Obama wound up being president…..LEAVE MICHELLE BACHMANN ALONE ON THIS ONE!!!! She has a darned good fighting chance become our next president, like it or not!

The difference between Bachmann and Obama is that she is campaigning on her spirituality and religion and the president wasn’t. She’s distinguishing herself as holy and right and godly, the president was not.

One commenter wondered how a busy elected official and candidate could make it back home for Sunday services:

Perhaps she just couldn’t make it to a Minn. church regularly since she’s been in Washington D.C for the last few years.

Many commenters raised questions about the membership process at her church:

The church council granted their request to be released from their membership???? Freaky. Could they have denied????

Why would she go through the trouble of “quitting” a church that she says she hasn’t attended in over two years? Something lies just below the surface that will surely rear its ugly head soon. Strange things from a strange woman.

One commenter seemed to have an answer for Michigan Joe, invoking the traditions of Bachmann’s denomination, the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod:

In the WELS you are a member until you request release or transfer. We do not just kick people out.

Over on Twitter, @danielwanke responded to our tweet about Bachmann leaving her church this way: “Just the congregation she hadn’t been attending.”
