The African nation of Angola has officially become the first country to ban Islam. The nation’s president recently declared that the move was “the final end of Islamic influence in [the] country.”
President Jose Eduardo also ordered that any mosques in the country be demolished. According to Eduardo, Islam runs “contradictory to the customs of Angola culture.” The predominant religion in Angola is Christianity, but there are currently around 90,000 Muslims living in the country. Many are either immigrants from West Africa or refugees from the Middle East.
Eduardo’s decision was in opposition to the many Middle Eastern countries that are currently persecuting Christians. In fact, in 2012, a Saudi Muslim leader issued an order to destroy all Christina churches on the Arabian Peninsula.
